Native email marketing

Native email marketing for Shopify and WooCommerce stores

Not every store needs Klaviyo on day one. I set up the email tools that come with your store platform, Shopify Messaging for Shopify and MailPoet for WooCommerce, properly: an authenticated sender domain, signup forms, the automations that earn the most, and campaigns that look like your brand. And when you outgrow them, I'll tell you honestly.

What native means

Email that's already
inside your store.

Native email tools come with, or are made for, your store platform. Your customers, orders, and products are already there, so there's nothing to integrate, and they cost little or nothing to start. For a new or small store, that's often the smartest place to begin. The catch is that they're easy to switch on and easy to set up badly: unauthenticated sender addresses, one-email automations, and campaigns sent to everyone.

Native tools are a great fit when
  • You're a new or smaller store with a modest list
  • You want the core automations running, without another subscription
  • You send a few campaigns a month
  • You want everything managed inside Shopify or WordPress
It's time to look at Klaviyo when
  • Email is becoming a real share of your revenue
  • You want many branching flows and detailed segments
  • You want predictive data, like expected next order and lifetime value
  • You want email, SMS, and WhatsApp planned and reported together

Shopify Messaging

Shopify's own email,
set up properly.

Shopify Messaging, formerly Shopify Email, is the email, SMS, and WhatsApp marketing tool that comes with Shopify. This is what I set up inside it.

Branded templates

Shopify's drag-and-drop editor pulls in your logo, colors, and products automatically. I turn that into a clean, reusable template set, so every campaign looks like your brand.

Marketing automations

Ready-made automations for abandoned checkouts, carts, and browsing, welcome discounts, post-purchase, win-back, birthdays, and VIPs. They run on Shopify Flow, so I can extend them when needed.

Customer segments

Segments from your Shopify customer data: new subscribers, first-time and repeat buyers, lapsed customers, and big spenders, so campaigns don't go to everyone.

Signup forms

Popups and embedded forms that collect email and SMS consent, with an offer worth subscribing for, connected to your welcome automation.

SMS and WhatsApp

Shopify Messaging also sends SMS and WhatsApp, paid per message by region. I add them only where they earn their cost, like abandoned checkout texts.

Reporting and testing

Shopify's dashboard shows opens, clicks, and sales from each email. I read it monthly, run A/B tests, and use Sidekick's send time and copy ideas as a starting point, not the final word.

Shopify automations

The automations
I switch on first.

Shopify Messaging comes with templates for each of these. I rewrite the copy, add your brand, set the timing and discounts, and test each one before it goes live.

Good to know: automations are edited on desktop, and turning one off cancels anyone waiting in it. For anything the templates can't do, like connecting a third-party app, I set up a custom workflow in Shopify Flow.

Costs

What Shopify email
actually costs.

Shopify Messaging is free to install. You pay only for what you send beyond the free allowance, added to your Shopify bill.

Shopify Messaging email pricing
Emails in a monthPrice
First 10,000Free
Up to 300,000$1 per 1,000 emails
After 300,000$0.65 per 1,000
After 750,000$0.55 per 1,000
Abandoned checkout emailsAlways free, and not counted
An exampleA store sending 25,000 marketing emails a month pays for 15,000 of them: about $15 on its Shopify bill.
SMS and WhatsAppTexts and WhatsApp messages are charged per message at regional rates. In the US and Canada, each toll-free number used for SMS marketing also costs $2.15 a month.

Sender authentication

Don't send from
a Gmail address.

This is the setting I fix most often. Gmail and Yahoo require authentication, so a store email sent from an address that can't be authenticated gets rewritten to a Shopify sending address. Customers see a stranger's address, and trust drops.

What I often find
  • Sender email is yourstore@gmail.com, which can never be authenticated
  • The domain was never authenticated in Shopify
  • No DMARC record, so Gmail and Yahoo treat emails with suspicion
What I set up
  • A sender address on your own domain, like hello@yourbrand.com
  • Your domain authenticated under Settings, Notifications, with the records Shopify provides
  • A DMARC record, without breaking your other email

DNS changes can take up to 24 hours. I make them early, before the first campaign, and check your existing records first. More detail on my email deliverability page.

WooCommerce

MailPoet, the native choice
for WooCommerce.

MailPoet is made by Automattic, the company behind WooCommerce, and runs inside your WordPress dashboard. It's free for stores with fewer than 500 subscribers.

WooCommerce automations

Emails triggered by what customers do in your store.

  • Abandoned cart series
  • First purchase
  • Purchase of a specific product or category
  • Order status changes and new reviews

Store emails, on brand

Your WooCommerce transactional emails, like order confirmations, redesigned to match your newsletters.

  • One consistent design
  • Clear order and product details

Reliable sending

Sending from your web host is a common reason WordPress emails land in spam.

  • MailPoet Sending Service instead of your host
  • Authenticated sender domain
  • Branching and custom automations on paid plans

How I set it up

Five steps,
from sender to first campaign.

Step 1

Sender and domain

A branded sender address, domain authentication, and DMARC, so emails come from you and reach the inbox.

Step 2

Signup and consent

Popups and embedded forms with a reason to subscribe, collecting email and SMS consent correctly.

Step 3

Core automations

Abandoned checkout and cart, a welcome series, and a post-purchase thank-you, written and designed for your brand.

Step 4

Templates and segments

A reusable campaign template and segments for new, repeat, and lapsed customers.

Step 5

Review and handover

Results after the first month, what to improve, and a walkthrough so you can send campaigns yourself.

Native or Klaviyo

An honest comparison,
side by side.

I'm a Klaviyo specialist, but I don't recommend it to every store. This is how I decide.

Native toolsKlaviyo
Cost to startFree or very lowA monthly plan based on your profiles
SetupAlready connected to your storeAn integration to connect and check
AutomationsSolid templates for the core journeysDetailed flows with splits, filters, and many steps
SegmentationBased on store customer dataStore data plus browsing, engagement, and predictions
ReportingPer-email and per-automation basicsRevenue attribution, benchmarks, and deliverability tools
Best forNew and smaller storesStores where email is a growth channel

Ready to move up? I handle the whole switch on my Klaviyo migrations page, and the flows I'd add on my Klaviyo flows page. Prefer to stay native for now? That's a good choice for many stores, and my custom package works for native setups too.

Our post-purchase flow was a single thank-you email. Obaid turned it into a 5-part sequence that now generates repeat orders on autopilot. Genuinely impressive work.

FAQ

Native email marketing,
straight answers.

It's email marketing with the tools that come with, or are made for, your store platform: Shopify Messaging for Shopify stores and MailPoet for WooCommerce. Your customers, orders, and products are already connected, so it's a simple, low-cost place to start.
Yes. Shopify Email is now part of Shopify Messaging, the email, SMS, and WhatsApp marketing tool that comes with Shopify. It's free to install from the Shopify App Store.
Every month you get 10,000 free emails. After that it's $1 per 1,000 emails up to 300,000, then less per 1,000 at higher volumes. Abandoned checkout emails are always free. SMS and WhatsApp are charged per message.
If your sender email can't be authenticated, for example a gmail.com address, Shopify rewrites it to a Shopify sending address to meet Gmail and Yahoo rules. The fix is a sender address on your own domain, authenticated in Shopify, with a DMARC record.
Recover abandoned checkout, recover abandoned cart, a welcome discount series, and a thank-you after purchase. Then browse abandonment, upsell after first purchase, and win-back.
MailPoet, made by Automattic, the company behind WooCommerce. It runs inside WordPress, is free for fewer than 500 subscribers, and includes abandoned cart, first purchase, and product-based automations.
When email becomes a real share of your revenue and you want detailed flows, segments based on browsing and engagement, predictive data, and email, SMS, and WhatsApp reported together. I'll tell you honestly if you're not there yet.
Yes. You can set up a custom package with the campaigns, automations, and forms you need on my monthly management page, and it works for Shopify Messaging and MailPoet as well as Klaviyo.
